Injection with (AS101) Tellerium-based Non-toxic Immunomodulatory Compound, Protects Men against Infertility Due to Chemotherapy
Paclitaxel (Taxol), a widely used chemotherapy drug can lose the fertility in male cancer patients. In a study presented at that 22nd annual conference of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology in Prague, Czech Republic on Tuesday 20 June 2006, it may be possible to protect the testes of cancer patients by injection of a drug that enhances the immune system.
The drug called AS101 is a Tellurium-based non-toxic immunomodulatory compound developed and synthesized by Mr. Alon Carmely and his team from Bar-Ilan University, Ramat Gan, Israel.
Tellurium is a transition element with similar properties to Selenium and is also known to have many beneficial effects. AS101 already demonstrated chemoprotective effects in both animal and human studies, so Carmely and his team decided to investigate whether it could be used to avoid testicular damage in mice treated with Taxol.
