Source of ancient Blue Dye, Woad Plant, Now a Rich Source of Anti-breast Cancer Compounds Found in Brocolli
While the anti-cancer compounds found in broccoli has been much studied, a new research suggests that more pure active compounds can be extracted from woad, a member of the same brassica plant family is a source of blue dye – a dye used in Neolithic times as paint in the faces of warriors to scare their enemies.
Woad, which is no longer commonly cultivated in Europe, is also a rich source of indole glucosinates, including glucobrassicon (GBS).
GBS and some of its by-products have been linked to anti-tumoural activity, particularly in breast cancer.
Researchers from the University of Bologna in Italy, led by Stefania Galletti to study the metabolic pathway of GBS in vivo, now found that a sufficiently rich vegetable source is available.
The researchers assessed whether the GBS in woad leaves could be stimulated to such as level as to enable purification of the compound and found that an enriched source of GBS is easily obtainable in the open field.
