Posit Science’s Brain Fitness Program: Non-invasive ‘Chemo Brain’ Therapy

by Gloria Gamat on November 8th, 2006

brain-_fitness_program.jpgTo evaluate the effectiveness of its Brain Fitness Program on “chemo brain”, Posit Science is conducting a study on breast cancer patients.

Posit Science’s Brain Fitness Program is a series of computer- based exercises designed to reverse losses in brain function, including memory loss and to improve concentration.

“Chemo brain” results in a deficit in cognitive function and affects quality of life by impairing ability to concentrate, make decisions and fulfil responsibilities.

Chemo brain is experienced by about 80% of cancer patients who undergo chemotherapy, a condition caused by chemotherapy itself as confirmed by a recent study from Baycrest Research Centre for Aging and the Brain.

While previous studies have shown that older adults who complete the Brain Fitness Program increase their memory on average ten years or more and experience increased focus and energy; this new study is designed to determine if patients suffering from “chemo brain” will experience the same positive results as patients suffering from age-related cognitive decline.

In order to participate in the study, people must either be post chemotherapy or currently taking chemotherapy and report mental decline.

Participants are required to train on computers in their homes for one hour a day, five days a week for two months and be willing to participate in telephone interviews and questionnaires.

For more information on this study and on how to participate, visit this website.
