Start Cancer Protection During Pregnancy with Indole-3-Carbinol (I3C): Phytochemical in Cruciferous Vegetable
Pregnant and nursing women should eat a nutritious diet that includes generous amounts of cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cabbage not only because of the nutritional benefits previously known and told but because it could protect their children from cancer both in infancy and adulthood. These were the suggestions of the findings of scientists from Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University which found (in laboratory mice) that supplementation of a key phytochemical (Indole-3-carbinol) found in certain vegetables provided a very high level of protection against leukemia and lymphoma in young animals while also significantly protected against lung cancer during the rodent’s middle age equivalent.
The said phytochemical, called Indole-3-carbinol or I3C could be obtained (with other phytochemicals) in any normal diet rich in cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, radishes, turnips and other types of greens and cabbages.
Supplementation of this compound in laboratory mice reduced deaths from lymphoma to half while the number of lung tumors later in life was significantly reduced.
The abovementioned research is the first of its type to demonstrate that diet may play a protective role in a fight against cancer that may begin before a person’s birth, the protective befits of which could last into adulthood.
The scientists however do not recommend supplementation of this compound (which is actually commercially available) by pregnant women because of its possible role in causing birth defects when ingested at high levels in the first trimester of pregnancy.
The said study was published in the journal Carcinogenesis.
