Risk of Breast Cancer Reduced by Flavonoid-Lignan-rich Diet

by Gloria Gamat on February 24th, 2007

Flavonoids: Chemistry, Biochemistry and ApplicationsSupporting previous findings from Greece and Italy, a research study in Long Island, New York led by Brian Fink from the University of North Carolina found that a flavonoid and lignan-rich diet could reduce the risk of developing breast cancer in postmenopausal women by 35%.

For postmenopausal women with an average intake of flavonols of more than 15.2 milligrams per day (mg/day) the risk of breast cancer was calculated to be reduced by 46 per cent, compared to women with a daily intake of up to 3.7 mg/day.

The risk of breast cancer was also reduced for flavones by 39 per cent (intakes of at least 0.22 mg/day compared to less than 0.04 mg/day), flavan-3-ols by 26 per cent (at least 264.2 mg/day versus less than 5.1 mg/day), and lignans by 31 per cent (at least 9.4 mg/day versus less than 2.0

Flavonoids are water-soluble plant pigments and like lignans are most commonly known for their antioxidant properties.

Study results have been published in the March 2007 issue of the American Journal of Epidemiology.
