Omega-3s Against Prostate Cancer
Fish-derived omega-3 fatty acids have the potential to slow the growth of prostate cancer in men, especially those that are genetically prone to develop the disease.
Such were the findings of an NIH-funded mice study.
According to senior researcher Yong Q. Chen, Ph.D., from Wake Forest University School of Medicine:
“This study clearly shows that diet can tip the balance toward a good or a bad outcome. It’s possible that a change in diet could mean the difference between dying from the disease and surviving with it.”
The said study findings - wherein it has been found that in mice that were engineered with a genetic defect that caused prostate cancer, a diet high in omega-3 fatty acids beginning at birth reduced tumor growth, slowed disease progression and increased survival – have been reported online recently at the Journal of Clinical Investigation and will appear in the July 2 print issue.
High dietary (in some cases supplementation) intake of omega-3 fatty acids have been consistently linked to good cardiovascular heath, reduced symptoms of dementia/Alzheimer’s disease and depression.
An now omega-3s are being linked positively to some cancers, thus, we cannot neglect its beneficial effects to our health.
How difficult is it to include more fish in the diet? Humans shouldn’t have learned how to hunt for foood (eat red meat). We should have stuck it out with plants and the bounty from the sea.
