Frozen Eggs and Women Cancer Patients
Women can now “suspend their ticking biological clock” by having their eggs frozen. But women undergoing cancer treatment are most likely to become sterile or undergo early menopause so that the process of having their eggs frozen are most beneficial – they can have a chance at motherhood later in life.
Now, even girls as young as five years old can have their eggs frozen. Doctors have successfully done this. Read the story at Telegraph UK.
Of course, the process doesn’t stop at freezing these girls’ eggs. The eggs have to mature and when they’re thawed, until it is fertilized we really cannot say if successful pregnancies will come out of them.
But if this Boston IVF can have successful pregnancy from a frozen egg, then I guess the very first lab-matured egg turning into a baby will not come as a surprise at all.
Such breakthroughs will indeed benefit women with cancer and I hope these scientific processes will not be abused by those women who would just like to delay their pregnancy because it is convenient to them. But then that is another totally different story.
