Consumption of Grapefruit Increases Risk of Breast Cancer
Always, I have equated grapefruit to weight loss. Grapefruit juice has always been recommended in any weight-loss diet. There was one time in my life I actually bought grapefruit juice, not because I wanted to lose weight but because I was curious what it tastes like.
Guess what? It was the most awful sour juice I’ve ever tasted in my whole life. No wonder you’ll lose weight because after a sip of grapefruit juice I immediately lost my appetite for food. I just find the taste so awful I couldn’t eat anything anymore afterwards.
That was my first and last brush with grapefruit. Fortunately, this citrus is not endemic here in the Philippines, so I guess I’ll never have another encounter.
Anyway, there must be women out there who love grapefruit or grapefruit juice. There must actually be people out there who have grapefruit constantly in their diet.
But beware, post-menopausal women: the risk of breast cancer is increased by almost a third in post-menopausal women by eating grapefruit.
Such were the finding of researchers from the universities of Southern California in Los Angeles and Hawaii in Honolulu. The researchers hypothesized that consumption of grapefruit increases a woman’s estrogen, thereby increasing risk of breast cancer.
Findings have been reported in the British Journal of Cancer.
Maybe women should re-consider eating grapefruit.

That’s interesting! Luckily for me, I don’t like grapefruit either. My husband loves it though. But he can’t eat it because of medication he takes. I imagine lots women can’t eat it because of that either.

I have eaten half a pink grapefruit at breakfast time for years under the impression that I am eating healthily and reducing fat storing in my body. When fat is a contributor to breast cancer it is difficult to comprehend why something that counteracts the production of fat should increase the risk of breast cancer at the same time. Can you explain the biological process please
thanks

Grace: remember that this association is only true in post menopausal women. grapefruit apparently increases the hormone estrogen thereby increasing the risk of breast cancer.
