Hypnosis Prior to Surgery Benefits Breast Cancer Patients

by Gloria Gamat on September 3rd, 2007

According to a study conducted by a team from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, hypnosis prior to breast cancer surgery reduced the amount of anesthesia administered during the operation and pain afterward.

Guy Montgomery of Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York and colleagues conducted a clinical trial to examine the effects of hypnosis when it is given within 1 hour before breast cancer surgery.

Two hundred women were randomly assigned to either 15 minutes of hypnosis by a psychologist or a control session in which they spoke with a psychologist.

The findings – published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute – reported that patients in the hypnosis group required less anesthesia than patients in the control group and they reported less pain, nausea, fatigue, discomfort and emotional upset after surgery.

What do you think? Are there breast cancer patients/survivors who can tell us something about this matter?

Find more details from the report at JNCI.
